NBC 5 Dallas is one of the most respected network affiliate stations in the United States. First coming on the air in 1944, it began newscasts in 1948. The Dallas NBC station was instrumental in its coverage of the Kennedy assassination, and its former on-air staff comprise one of the most impressive journalist alumni in all of television. Scott Pelley, Charlie Rose, and Bob Schieffer of CBS News and 60 Minutes all began with NBC5 early in their careers. Also, Gretchen Carlson formerly of Fox News began here, as did Boyd Matson of National Geographic.

NBC 5 is owned by NBCUniversal. It is an affiliate of the network NBC network. As an affiliate, Dallas KXAS tends to focus its original news coverage on local issues during the traditional morning, mid-day, evening and late-night news slots. Dallas NBC currently airs 36 hours of station produced news broadcasts each week. Each weekday there is six hours, and there is an additional three hours on Saturdays and Sundays. NBC5 goes beyond newscasts to also air a Texas political affairs show called Lone Star Politics.
