WHY IT’S OF INTEREST
This is surely one of the most important, and controversial, Supreme Court Justice nominations in history. And that’s before the world even knows who the nominee is.
Following the death of longtime Justice Antonin Scalia, it didn’t take long before politicians began fighting over filling his seat. Many Republicans want to see the seat remain empty until it can be filled by the next President elect. The Right made its push to postpone the process — in the hopes that it could be completed by a Republican President.
President Obama, obviously, didn’t care for that tack, and neither did plenty of politicians and citizens on both sides. Today is the day the name comes out. Plenty of squabbling is sure to follow. It’s also possible Republicans will take another shot at delaying things by dragging out the vetting process, but that’s all just speculation for now.
