How to Import an Apple Keynote File into OpenOffice ImpressBy Lyn Atwood / January 4, 2013 / Tags: Tech
Follow this guide to open and edit Apple Keynote presentation files in OpenOffice Impress.
You have old presentation files on your hard drive which were created in Apple’s Keynote presentation software. Now you’ve made the switch to Apache OpenOffice, the free full featured Office Suite. You want to open and edit your Apple Keynote files in OpenOffice Impress. Keynote doesn’t have an option to export your old presentations as *.odp (OpenDocument Presentation) files. How do you import your Keynote presentations into OpenOffice Impress?
There is no way to export Apple Keynote presentation files as OpenOffice Impress *.odp files. There is also no way to import Keynote files directly into OpenOffice Impress. Unfortunately, neither Apple nor Apache have developed extensions or applications for this process. Fortunately, there is a workaround that can help you open your Keynote presentations in Impress. Simply follow the steps below to convert your Keynote files to Microsoft PowerPoint (*.ppt) files. OpenOffice Impress is compatible with Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, so you will be able to open these files in Impress, then save them as *.odp files.
To Convert a Keynote File to a PowerPoint File:
1. Open the file in Apple Keynote.
2. Click “File,” then select “Export” from the drop-down menu.
3. Select the “PPT” tab, then click the “Next” button.
4. Enter a file name and select the location where you would like to save the converted file.
5. Click “Export.”
Once you have followed the above instructions, you will have a new Microsoft PowerPoint presentation file saved on your hard drive. Follow the steps below to open the *.ppt file in OpenOffice Impress.
To Open a PowerPoint File in Impress:
1. In OpenOffice, click “File,” then select “Open” from the drop-down menu.
2. Under “File type,” select either “All files (*.*),” “Presentations,” or “Microsoft PowerPoint 97/2000/XP” from the drop-down menu.
3. Navigate to the *.ppt file on your hard drive, select it, and click “Open.”
Once you have completed the above steps, you will have your formerly Keynote presentation open in OpenOffice Impress. Some compatibility issues may exist between Keynote and Impress, so you should check your presentation to verify that it looks exactly the way you want. Then you can save it as an OpenOffice Impress presentation by selecting “OpenDocument Presentation (.odp)” as the file type.
If you want to take advantage of Impress, OpenOffice’s free, full featured presentation program, you don’t have to get rid of your old Apple Keynote presentation files. With a few extra steps, you can open those files in OpenOffice Impress, and save them as OpenDocument Presentation files. If a friend or co-worker wants to send you a presentation he created in Keynote, let him know that he will just need to save it as a *.ppt file so that you will be able to view it in OpenOffice Impress. With these simple instructions, you can open and edit almost any type of presentation file for free with OpenOffice Impress.
