Hide My Ass VPN Review 2017By Jeremy Evans / February 22, 2017 / Tags: VPN Reviews
Content blocking, identity theft, hackers, spies, and scammers are all part of the internet these days. To avoid the threats and restrictions, you need to use a virtual private network (VPN) like Hide My Ass. The name is fitting. HMA will hide your IP address and secure your connection on any device. It’s a popular VPN, and deserves its inclusion in our list of the top 5. However, with only 2 devices allowed per subscription, and nothing special to set it apart, HMA loses out to other services that have better features at a lower price. Our #1 rated NordVPN, for example, lets you use 6 devices at once, and has specialized servers for high-speed streaming, at only $3.29/month.

One of HMA’s biggest assets is the simple interface of its apps. Along with NordVPN, Hide My Ass is one of the easiest VPNs to use, unlike some that are loaded with options and can be confusing for beginners (IPVanish for example).
When you first launch the HMA app, you see 3 choices for how you want to connect. Instant Mode will connect you to the closest, fastest server. This is great if you just want to get online quickly.
In Location Mode, you can choose your server location. If you need to unblock content in a certain area, pick Location Mode and connect to a local server. Unfortunately, Hide My Ass doesn’t tell you the server load for each server, unlike NordVPN and others. This makes it hard to choose the server with the least traffic.
It’s a letdown that HMA does not have any specialty servers for specific activities like TV streaming, torrenting, etc. Our top-rated NordVPN has designated servers for high-speed TV streaming, a Tor network, double encryption, and more. Hide My Ass also does not work to unblock Netflix, which now only a small handful of VPNs do (NordVPN and ExpressVPN are two that still work with Netflix).
The third option is Freedom Mode, which connects you to the “closest free-speech country.” Most US users will be connected to Canada in this mode.
Hide My Ass has excellent speeds in both upload and download speed testing. Speed is a top deal-breaker factor in choosing a VPN, and HMA passes the test.
If you’re looking for lots of different server location options, HMA doesn’t disappoint with 859 servers in around 240 locations throughout 190 countries. This includes locations that are underrepresented by some other VPNs, like Africa, South America, and Central America. The variety of locations is impressive, but again, it’s too bad this VPN doesn’t provide real-time load stats or dedicated servers for various needs.
Most users won’t care about which protocol they use to connect. But if you do care, HMA will probably come up short. It uses OpenVPN on Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows, and IPSec on iOS.
Using Hide My Ass With Kodi
If you use Kodi — and particularly certain add-ons that let you watch free TV — using a VPN with Kodi is critical to stay secure and anonymous. Plus, a VPN will let you bypass location restrictions on add-ons so you can stream more TV.
Hide My Ass is a top five Kodi VPN. It has fast speeds, top security and privacy features, a huge variety of server locations, and is very easy to use.
The problem for HMA is that — while it does a great job — other VPNs do a better job in just about every area. This doesn’t mean you’d be unhappy with Hide My Ass on Kodi — quite the contrary. But it does mean that there are better features available at a better value with other VPNs.
One of the biggest considerations is the lack of specialty servers for streaming on Kodi. Only NordVPN has this fantastic feature, which is a big part of why Nord is our first choice for a Kodi VPN.
Another thing in HMA’s disfavor is the limit on the number of devices you can use — just 2, and they have to be connected to different servers. That’s a pretty stingy allotment, especially considering that Hide My Ass doesn’t offer the best deal (that honor goes to NordVPN).
So Hide My Ass comes in behind NordVPN and others as the best choice for Kodi. But it’s still a great service.
Service That’s No Joke
HMA provides a rock-solid VPN service and has a loyal user base. It’s a great choice for a variety of needs. But, it doesn’t offer anything special for streamers. So if you’re looking for a VPN to use with Kodi, Netflix, or other streaming platforms, I recommend you look at our #1 rated NordVPN which has unique features for better, faster streaming, and is a better value at just $3.29/mo for a 2-year plan.
