Astronauts stationed on the International Space Station (ISS) will venture outside for a galactic walkabout Friday, Jan. 6.

The Expedition 50 astronauts will leave the confines of the ISS for the vastness of space to perform a complex upgrade to the orbital outpost’s power system. The two astronauts chosen for the spacewalk are Expedition 50 Commander Shane Kimbrough and Flight Engineer Peggy Whitson of NASA.

Prior to the spacewalk, new batteries will be robotically extracted from a pallet to replace 12 older nickel-hydrogen batteries through a series of robotic operations. Nine of the older batteries will be stowed in a cargo resupply craft for later disposal, while three will remain on the station’s truss, disconnected from the power grid.

ISS astronauts will perform a second spacewalk on Jan. 13 to continue the work.

NASA TV will air live coverage of Friday’s spacewalk starting at 5:30 AM EST. The astronauts are expected to exit the ISS at around 7 AM EST. The spacewalk will last about six and a half hours
